LNP Out of Touch on Abortion: Poll Shows
Queensland’s peak union body has slammed the Crisafulli opposition for failing to listen to workers, with an independent poll commissioned by the union confirming three quarters of respondents do not support any repeal of current abortion laws in Queensland.
The survey, taken by over 1000 voting aged Queenslanders, shows the attitudes of Queenslanders to abortion do not align with those of the majority of the State LNP Opposition who voted to keep abortion a crime in Queensland and deny women legal access to MS-2 Step prescriptive abortion medication.
Responding to the question “In 2018 Queensland Law was changed to take Termination of Pregnancy out of the Criminal Law and permit it as a matter of healthcare. Was this change right or wrong?”, 75% responded ‘right’ with just 11% saying they thought the change was wrong and 14% undecided.
Crisafulli has refused to rule out the ability of his MPs to take a conscience vote on abortion laws in light of Katter’s Australia Party vowing to introduce a private members bill to repeal existing laws.
Quotes attributable to Jacqueline King, General Secretary, Queensland Unions:
“These results cement how out of touch David Crisafulli and his coalition of shadow ministers are when it comes to what people expect from political decision makers in a modern society.
“This survey confirms Queenslanders do not see themselves reflected in the extreme anti-abortion views held by so many members of his Party, and regressing women’s rights would be unsupported by Queenslanders at large.
“It’s obvious the LNP are still living in the dark ages on the topic of abortion and would love to conjure up some shameful image of promiscuous teenagers who should be punished for an unplanned pregnancy. In fact, we know for the most part that it is working women in their forties opting to terminate a pregnancy.
“As the voice for working women, we know women’s plates are at capacity and for many families the prospect of another child is the last thing they can manage on top of parenting and work responsibilities, not to mention cost of living.
“In any circumstance, a woman’s reproductive choice needs no explanation to a political party, let alone David Crisafulli.
“The only person a woman should be consulting with on this decision is her healthcare professional.”
